Témoignage thalidomide – Les Monstres de Heidelberg

Lors d’un congrès de neurologie à Düsseldorf, les 30 avril et 1er mai 1960, le neurologue Ralf Voss sonne l’alarme à la thalidomide. (1)

Ce message d’alarme a été reçu par de nombreuses personnes, dont apparemment mon père médecin. Je suis né vingt mois plus tard sans avant-bras droit.

En dépit de ce message d’alarme, les fonctionnaires qui avaient autorisé la thalidomide sur les marchés n’en n’ont pas conclu qu’ils devaient la retirer. Il faudra donc que son fabricant, la Chemie Grünenthal GmbH à Stolberg, Aix-la-Chapelle, prenne dix-huit mois plus tard l’initiative de ce retrait le 27 novembre 1961.

Ceci est un scandale et non un drame. (2)

Le scandale de la thalidomide réside dans le fait que les gouvernements n’ont pas réagi à cette annonce de dangerosité (3),
J. Custers, le ministre belge de la santé (publique), écrivant “le peuple a failli à ses devoirs les plus élémentaires. Il n’a plus qu’à s’en aller”. Les sujets belges se demandèrent pourquoi les irresponsables, les “responsables” pour l’auteur de l’ouvrage que je cite en note, de la santé en Belgique n’avertirent pas aussitôt la population, par tous les moyens de diffusion, presse, radio, télévision, affiches. Moi monstre softenon (nom commercial de la thalidomide en Belgique) né, “bis repetita placet”, vingt mois après le 1er mai 1960, en Belgique, j’ajoute : pourquoi les autorités, les soi-disant autorités, qui avaient autorisé la thalidomide sur les marchés n’ont-elles pas retiré cette autorisation et pourquoi n’ont-elles, surtout, pas retiré la thalidomide du marché ?

Moi monstre ajoute également : Et pourquoi Custers dit-il que c’est le peuple, et non l’état belge, qui a failli à ses devoirs les plus élémentaires et qui n’a plus qu’à s’en aller ? Si l’état belge est incapable d’accomplir les tâches qu’on lui assigne, c’est l’état belge, et non les sujets dudit état, qui doit quitter le territoire du Royaume, à présent fédéral nous dit l’état belge, de Belgique.

LE MARIAGE ET LE VOYAGE DE NOCES

Mon père, Henri Cerckel, s’intéressait trop aux femmes. A quinze ans, ma grand-mère l’a envoyé en pension. Il voulait faire des études d’ingénieur, mais il avait surtout étudié le grec et le latin et s’il avait dû se consacrer à des études d’ingénieur, il aurait été dans l’obligation de passer une année supplémentaire en pension pour étudier les mathématiques. Il a donc opté pour des études de médecine. En outre, il avait une petite amie. Ma grand-mère paternelle s’opposait à ce que mon père épouse cette femme faute de se faire déshériter. Pour ma petite bourgeoise de grand-mère paternelle, la copine de mon père n’était d’assez “bonne famille”. Et c’est ma grand-mère maternelle qui lui mettra ma mère dans les bras. Ma mère a donc été forcée par sa mère d’épouser mon père.

L’alarme à la thalidomide a été sonnée les 30 avril et 1er mai 1960. Mes parents belges se sont mariés en Belgique fin avril 1961. La thalidomide a été retirée du marché le 27 novembre 1961. Je suis né en Belgique à la mi-février 1962 sans avant-bras droit. (5)

Afin de démontrer à sa mère que ma mère était de “très mauvaise famille”, mon père s’est peut-être dit qu’en administrant de la thalidomide à ma mère, ma mère ne pourrait tomber enceinte. Il pouvait alors reprocher à ses parents de l’avoir forcé à épouser une femme stérile.

Mes parents ont passé leur voyage de noces à bord du yacht, amarré en Méditerranée, de mon grand-père paternel. Ce grand-père y trouva plus tard de la thalidomide. S’il l’a trouvée, c’est probablement qu’elle y avait été cachée, mon père l’ayant administré à ma mère à son insu et ne se rappelant plus ensuite en avoir laissé.

La sœur de mon père m’a dit en 1998 qu’à ma naissance, mon grand-père paternel s’est demandé “Thuysbaert, c’est quoi comme famille cela ?”, “Thuysbaert” étant le nom patronymique de ma mère.

N’était-ce pas cela la réaction que mon père espérait en emmenant de la thalidomide en voyage de noces ?

En effet, mon père pouvait répondre : “C’est ta faute, si tu m’avais laissé épouser la femme que j’aimais, cela ne se serait pas produit.”

Mon père a donc pu reprocher à ses parents de l’avoir forcé à épouser une femme qui donne naissance à un monstre … jusqu’au jour où son père trouve de la thalidomide cachée sur son (celui de mon grand-père) yacht à bord duquel mes parents avaient passé leur voyage de noces.

Evidemment si mon grand-père a trouvé la thalidomide avant ma naissance et si mon grand-père connaissait déjà à ma naissance les effets de la thalidomide, mon raisonnement n’est peut-être plus valable. Le fait que mon grand-père ait accusé les gênes de la famille de ma mère semble indiquer que mon raisonnement soit quand-même valable.

LES MONSTRES DE HEIDELBERG

A l’âge de quatre ans, on me met une prothèse avec une main en bois. La gaine de cette prothèse couvrait le coude droit ainsi que ce qui me reste de l’avant-bras droit.
Résultat des courses : Transpirations épouvantables en été. Froid épouvantable en hiver.

Ce bât au sens figuratif (ou plutôt au sens réel ?) ne blessait pas seulement réellement mon coude droit et mes deux épaules (une bretelle allant de mon coude droit à mon épaule gauche), cette prothèse au sens réel annihilait également tout le toucher de l’avant-bras.
Résultat des courses : Je n’avais plus aucun sens du toucher dans mon membre supérieur droit.

En mars ou avril 1969, à l’âge de sept ans, mon père m’envoie avec ma mère à Heidelberg en Allemagne où l’on me remplace la main en bois par un crochet. Je ne me souviens de RIEN de ce qui s’est passé là-bas. A part le crochet, j’en ai ramené un panier en rotin que j’aurais fait à l’aide du crochet comme les aveugles, m’a-t-on dit. Je ne me souviens de rien. Toutes ces mémoires ont été bloquées ou effacées.

Je ne me souviens pas non plus des réactions des autres enfants. Tout ce dont je me rappelle c’est qu’en cours de récréation on venait me chercher pour effrayer les autres enfants.

En rencontrant par hasard mon oncle, Daniel Thuysbaert, le frère de ma mère, chez ma grand-mère maternelle en automne 1997, celui-ci s’est mis à rire lorsqu’en me voyant, il se rappelait comment ses quatre enfants, tous mes aînés, avaient peur de moi avec mon crochet.

En 1998, la soeur de mon père m’a dit que mes parents ont fait ce qu’il fallait (pour réduire l’atrophie). Je ne peux donc rien reprocher à mes parents, me disait-elle. Ils ont fait leur devoir, ajouterait Emmanuel Kant.

Un dimanche matin de mai 1970, en sortant de l’automobile de mon père qui se rangeait devant son club de tennis où nous (mes parents et leur quatre enfants) allions déjeuner, je me suis jeté sur une automobile en mouvement.
Résultat des courses : fracture des deux fémurs, six semaines de coma.

ARISTOTE ET LE CINÉMA

A cause du coma subséquent, je ne me souviens pas de l’accident. On m’a toujours dit que c’est en courant derrière un ballon que je me suis jeté sur cette automobile. Je me demande si ce n’était pas à cause d’une dispute avec mon père concernant le port du crochet. Il devait faire très chaud ce jour-la.

Mais même après cet accident, mon père m’a encore obligé, pour presque deux ans je crois, à porter ce crochet.

Il avait vu, comme tout le monde, au cinéma, à la télévision et dans les bandes dessinées, qu’un crochet était très utile aux manchots, afin m’a dit sa sœur en 1998, non de remplacer la main en tant qu’outil, “instrument des instruments” selon Aristote (6), mais de réduire l’atrophie du moignon. C’est précisément cette atrophie qui explique le froid épouvantable en hiver dans la gaine du crochet.

Vous ne me croyez pas ? Et bien, montrez-moi un seul exemple réel de quelqu’un pour qui un tel crochet est utile (dans la vie de tous les jours et pas seulement pour une tâche spécifique –
la main n’étant pas un outil spécifique mais l’outil des outils, nous dit le Philosophe).

Je veux encore bien admettre qu’à quatre ans, on m’ait attaché une main parce que la vue d’une personne sans main choque. Je veux même admettre qu’on ait complètement changé son fusil d’épaule en disant quand j’avais sept ans qu’il me fallait un crochet pour remplacer la main, l’outil des outils, nous dit Aristote. Ce que je ne parviens pas à comprendre c’est comment une fois que j’avais démontré en pratique que l’outil des outils ne peut se faire remplacer par un autre outil, mon père ait néanmoins réussi à convaincre tout le monde qu’il fallait continuer à me forcer à porter ce crochet pour réduire l’atrophie du moignon. En effet, pour réduire l’atrophie, le crochet devait remplacer la main. Or, j’avais démontré en pratique que le crochet ne pouvait remplacer la main. Je ne puis donc que conclure que père voulait juste me faire souffrir avec le crochet pour se venger de ses parents qui ne l’avaient
pas autorisé à épouser la femme qu’il voulait. Et ce qu’on appelle la “Société” a laissé faire. Tout comme cette “Société” a laissé mon père conduire ma mère et mes deux frères au suicide.
Nouvelle conclusion : mon père est un prédateur, un dominateur, une espèce de crapule. Et l’état, soi-disant de droit (7), et ses assistants sociaux, ont décidé qu’il fallait laisser faire et nous détruire.

Ma mère s’est en effet, et je ne rêve pas, suicidée en 1977. Mon frère Jacques, né en 1964, s’est suicidé en 1986, trois semaines après le mariage de mon père. Mon frère Jean-Louis, né en 1963, s’est suicidé en 2007 en Afrique du Nord où il vivait. Ma sœur, Nathalie, née en 1966, vit toujours et elle est bras dessus bras dessous avec la femme de mon père.

LES PRÉNOMS

En voyant ces prénoms français, vous vous demanderez d’où vient le mien. Eh bien oui, sur mon acte de naissance je m’appelle “Yves”, mais lorsque j’ai commencé à travailler à mon compte à Bruxelles en 1986, et non à Anvers où j’ai passé ma jeunesse, je l’ai changé officieusement.

Depuis 18 mois, je sais que mon père connaissait les effets de la thalidomide depuis mai 1960. Et apparemment, il a pris peur que la “Société” n’allait cette fois plus le laisser faire. Et il a changé son prénom à  l’annuaire téléphonique belge continuellement mis à jour sur Internet

Ce n’est en effet, que depuis avril 2008, lorsque le Sunday Times a recommencé à publier des articles sur le scandale de la thalidomide, que j’ai appris, suite à mes recherches sur Internet, l’existence du congrès de Düsseldorf des 30 avril et 1er mai 1960. Depuis lors, j’ai fait état de cela en néerlandais et en anglais sur Internet et depuis lors, également, mon père est inscrit sur l’annuaire téléphonique belge continuellement mis à jour sur Internet non plus comme “Henri” Cerckel, mais comme “Hendrik” Cerckel. A la page 96 de l’ouvrage “Le drame de la thalidomide - Un médicament sans frontières – 1956-2009″ de Jérôme Janicki (Paris, L’Harmattan, 2009), déjà cité en notes (2), (3) et (4), les 19 monstres softenon belges sont répartis par province.

Il n’y a que cinq des (à l’époque) neuf provinces mentionnées. Moi je suis né dans la province de Flandre orientale qui n’est pas mentionnée.

La faute ne se situe pas chez l’auteur du livre mais comme celui-ci le signale chez “les inspecteurs de l’hygiène recueillant dans toutes les maternités du pays les cas d’enfants ayant des malformations congénitales”, ces inspecteurs ont probablement été intimidés par mon père (médecin - dans l’hôpital où il était apprenti-chirurgien et où ma mère avait accouché).

Any law book on product liability will tell you that thalidomide shows that and why we need product-liability laws.

Guv’mints are liable for thalidomide because their regulators allowed thalidomide on the market and when the whistle on thalidomide was blown at a Düsseldorf congress of neurologists on 30 April - 01 May 1960, those same regulators have not done anything.
Thalidomide was eventually taken from the market on 27 November 1961, by its maker, Chemie Grünenthal GmbH, and thus not by the regulators who had allowed it in the first place. Comprendo?

Yes, our Masters continue to argue that thalidomide shows the need for a welfare state, c.q. a police state,

It is about time that this comedy stops.

German Conterganstiftung or thalidomide foundation is a fraud – UK guv’mint also

All of a sudden, Grünenthal and the Stiftung agree to universally grant “Leistungen” only.

Thalidomide was created by the Nazis. This means the German federal republic is liable for it. (1)

Outside Ireland and a few other countries where Chemie Grünenthal GmbH, the manufacturer, sold the drug directly it has refused compensation, arguing it is the responsibility of the licence holders. (2)

In Germany, the federal republic has instituted the Conterganstiftung on 19 December 1971. (3)

By instituting that foundation, the federal republic said German thalidomide monsters could only file claims against the foundation, no longer against Grünenthal.

On 01 July 2009, the German Bundestag or parliament denied that thalidomide was created by the Nazis. (4)

Of course, if thalidomide was created by the Nazis, the guv’mint of the federal republic of Germany is liable. Did you expect the said republic to recognise its liability?

It would appear that on the same 01 July 2009, the Bundestag also adopted its second revision of the law relating to the Conterganstiftung  (”Zweite Änderungsgesetz zum Conterganstiftungs- gezetz”).

This revision allows non-German thalidomide monsters, of whom I am one (5), to claim “Leistungen”
(”Leistungen”- I can’t find the correct translation – maybe “prestations” in French –
“performances”, “achievements”, says Collins Pocket German Dictionary),
from  … Grünenthal through the Conterganstiftung,
although the said Stiftung was instituted to stop the filing of claims by German and Irish thalidomide monsters against Grünenthal.

All of a sudden, the Conterganstiftung and Grünenthal are thus prepared to pay to non-Germans.

BUT

The claims which can be filed against Grünenthal, through the foundation, are only claims for “Leistungen”, not for compensation for the damage suffered.

And if the claim is granted by the Stiftung (and paid by Grünenthal), the claimant has no more claim against …  Grünenthal.

Against Grünenthal?
Yes, to that effect, the claimant has to sign a “Verzichtserkläring”  (declaration of renunciation) to  … the foundation.

But outside Ireland and a few other countries where Grünenthal sold the drug directly it has refused compensation, arguing it is the responsibility of the licence holders.

If the Sunday Times reveals this autumn more details about thalidomide, the argument of Grünenthal’s lawyers will be that the submission, not only the granting, of this new application, will bar the claimant from invoking these newly revealed elements.

And the “Leistungen” are only paid from the date of the 2009 application onwards. They are not about compensation of the damage, but only about the ability to remain alive.

And when you file the application, you do not have only to prove your thalidomide monstrosity by submitting X-rays, but you have also to indicate in the “Hintergrundbericht” (background message) which brand of thalidomide your mother took. Perhaps, they also want the prescriptions, like they did in Spain (6)?

And it is Grünenthal (or the Conterganstiftung – what is the relationship between them?) which unilaterally will determine the amount of the “Leistungen”.

And then in the “Angaben zu Conterganschäden”, you have to indicate what damage you have suffered by thalidomide, but the medical profession is still so “terrified by” or “under the shock of” thalidomide that it does not dare to link anything to thalidomide.

As I said, developing …

For the World Health Organisation, the concept of right and wrong has to be eradicated.

Hence, the WHO did nothing to prevent thalidomide from staying 18 months on the market after its dangers had been pointed out on 1st May 1960.

 

In an 18 July 2009 post, I argued that I am a thalidomide monster because of the World Health Organisation. (1)

 

My argument ran as follows:
I was born in February 1962.
The dangers of thalidomide were known since at least 1st May 1960.
The World Health Organisation only recommended banning thalidomide in 1961.

The guy was a psycho-analyst who advocated no less that the eradication of the concept of right and wrong. He maintained that it is the task of the psychiatrist to free the human race from the crippling burden of good and evil. (4)

The dangers of thalidomide were known since at least 1st May 1960. (1)

The reason why we were not told the truth about the cause of our handicap was the shame of our parents
(my father, Henri Hendrik Cerckel, a medical doctor, having done it on purpose,
my mother being too stupid to understand this result of her arranged marriage).

 

We are however also ashamed and the “culture” also. (1) (2)

 

Indeed, at our births, everybody acted badly. This has frightened us within minutes. We have concluded within those same minutes that there was something wrong with us.
[Interesting questions:
Something wrong vis-à-vis what?
Did we know at birth what is “normal”?
Did we conclude that there was no order outside of the womb?]

 

This reaction has been stored. The conclusions we draw from this storage, i.e., the shame, prevent us from acting comfortably with people.

This shame is “asking” energy. Emotions are energy felt in the body. Positive emotions are useful. Negative emotions interfere with [our capacity to enjoy life]

.

Our energy is wrapped up in shame. This energy should be freed up.

Our handicap is not the missing limbs. It is the shame.

Shame can make people sick, making them want to disappear, jeopardising their life.
People humiliate/shame us because we are monsters. (3)

Shame is not only with our parents.

It is also in the CULTURE.

Therefore,

nobody dares to make explicit to us that the thalidomide warnings of Dr Ralf Voss at the 30 April - 01 May 1960 Düsseldorf congress of neurologists (4) were known eighteen months before 27 Nov 1961 when our drug was taken from the market.
(I was born February 1962)

 

2.
after half a century, we still have to fight AGAINST (our and) their shame.
The shame explains why we were never (fully? – I didn’t yet receive anything) compensated for the damage we are still suffering.

Thalidomide had been tested before use.
Thalidomide was created by the Nazis.
Its origins go back to 1938 and one Frances Oldham Kelsey.
Thalidomide was marketed since 1957. Kelsey was only appointed to the US of A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after the 30 April- 1 May 1960 Duesseldorf Congress of neurologists warning of the dangers of thalidomide.
In 1938 the name of Frances Oldham Kelsey, at the ripe old age of 24, appeared at the FDA in connection with the Elixir Sulfanilamide disaster.
Upon Kelsey feigning to ignore the April-May 1960 Duesseldorf Congress, US of A President John F. Kennedy honoured Kelsey in 1962 with a Presidential award for having saved his country from her product.
Now they are saying that thalidomide is useful in ophthalmology. Thanks to thalidomide, this thalidomide monster has serious ophthalmological problems. Hence, some ophthalmologists will do everything they can to prevent losing him as a paying guinea pig.
Every mother knows that her child should not play with a toy the child does not understand. The mechanism of the biological action of thalidomide is still being debated.
Human nature is constituted as such that some individuals who have inside knowledge about the effects of thalidomide will ‘always’ deliberately and unnoticeably cause the serious harm thalidomide can ‘so easily’ cause. They do that precisely because the damage is so serious to the mother and to the child and because they can do that so easily and without being noticed. It may be that ‘in clinical trials’, thalidomide is shown to be effective against many things. But ‘in real life’, it is given to unsuspecting girls. This can be reconciled with John Lennon if one remembers that thalidomide was created by the Nazis.

Die Firma Grünenthal kündigt in einem Telegramm an das Düsseldorfer Innenministerium an, ihre Thalidomid-Präparate im In- und Ausland sofort aus dem Handel zu nehmen.  (1)

 

Ja, ich weiß,
Grünenthal wusste vor dem 1. Mai 1960, dass Contergan wurde eine teratogene, d.h., dass Contergan Monster schafft.
